The medical cannabis industry is a multibillion dollar industry with some form of sales legal in half of the United States. It’s the fastest growing industry in America, and will only continue to grow exponentially – especially as more research emerges from highly reputable sources indicating that cannabis is a highly effective product with a wide variety of medical and psychiatric applications, no possibility of lethal overdose, and little negative impact on health, especially when compared to other medications available on the market. Business owners, entrepreneurs, and sales and marketing professionals are taking note- and for good reason.

 

Here are 6 medical cannabis statistics (plus a few extras) that explain

.1)Colorado has the largest number of medical marijuana patients in the United States, with 19.8 patients per 1,000 state residents. Phoenix Arizona, Las Vegas Nevada and California has the second largest number, with 19.4 patients per thousand residents, and Washington State and Oregon each come in third with 19.2 patients per 1,000 state residents. Using this ratio of total patients to every 1,000 state residents and extrapolating that to all fifty states in the USA, one can estimate that the total number of medical marijuana users in the country total approximately 2,604,079, which is a national average of 8.06 medical marijuana users per thousand people. That’s 0.81% of Americans. It’s an interesting statistic. Compare that to, for instance, the number of Americans who eat a vegan diet (0.5% in 2015). Vegan food such as plant based meat is a booming industry, with profits rising 8% between 2010 and 2022. When you realize that there are less vegans than medical marijuana consumers in the U.S., you begin to understand the vast potential for profit in the medical cannabis industry.

2) 92% of medical marijuana patients say that the drug works and according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine that was published in 2013, 8 out of 10 doctors approve of the use of medical marijuana. Patients say that medical marijuana alleviated the symptoms of serious medical conditions such as migraine, cancer, arthritis, and chronic pain. 5% of Californians report that they had used medical marijuana for serious medical conditions. 6% to 8% of caucasians reported having ever used marijuana, compared to 2%-4% of Hispanics or Latinos, and 2-7% of African Americans. The age group who had tried marijuana the most were the 18-24 years bracket and mostly male, but only by a small margin (4% to 6% of males had tried marijuana as opposed to 3% to 5% of females.) Business owners and sales and marketing professionals take note; this is your primary demographic.

3) Currently, 24 states and the District of Columbia have medical marijuana laws of varying degrees. Ten other states have enacted laws which allow certain individuals, some strictly in a research setting, to use CBD oil. CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid find in marijuana. It’s non-psychotropic, so it’s users don’t get “high” like recreational marijuana users hope to. Scientific research strongly supports that CBD is extremely safe for humans to use, that there is zero risk of lethal overdose, and that organ failure due to use of the medication has not been documented. It may effectively treat diabetes, cancer, pain in multiple sclerosis patients, chronic liver disease, some forms of obesity, anxiety, and a wide variety of psychiatric diseases. Medicinal cannabinoids like CBD have anti spastic, analgesic, neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory applications. They also treat nausea and vomiting, especially in cancer patients. 33.2% of the US population are covered by a marijuana law of some kind. The business impact has been and will continue to be dramatic; with approximately half of the states in the USA allowing the sale of marijuana, it’s no wonder that this is already a multi billion dollar industry.

4) The Minnesota Department of Health’s Office of Medical Cannabis (OMC) reports that 570 health care practitioners are registered and authorized to certify medical marijuana patients. 1,548 patients have thus far been approved to pick up medical marijuana, and 190 patient caregivers have completed their background checks and are approved in the OMC registry. The OMC website is a great source of information as it is updated weekly and thus is always up to date.

5) 76% of doctors worldwide approve of medical marijuana use. In certain scenarios, that number rose to 78%. The international survey included responses from 1,446 doctors from 72 different countries and 56 different provinces and states in North America. This is due to tremendous amounts of research, which indicate that cannabis has a wide variety of medical and psychiatric benefits. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (USA) states, however, that it will not give marijuana Food and Drug Administration approval. There’s debate as to whether or not physicians should participate in their patient’s decision to use medical cannabis, or if they should be taken out of the picture altogether.
